The history

The name of Sekadau taken from  a kind of tree which  grew up in estuary of Sekadau river.  The local citizens named it Batang Adau.

Initially Sekadau citizens  are  fraction of  Dara Nante which Singa Patih Bardat and Patih Bangi were the leader. They continued the trip to the headwaters of Sekadau river. The group of Singa Patih Bardat lowered the Kematu, Benawas, Sekadau and Melawang, and group of Patih Bangi were the ancestor  of  Dayak Melawang which lowered the Kings of Sekadau.

At the first time, Sekadau kingdom was in Kematu region, approximately  3 kilometers beside Rawak region. The first king of Sekadau was  Prince Engkong who had three sons, they were prince Agong, Prince Kadar and prince Senarong.

After  prince  Engkong died, the kingdom was continued by Prince Kadar, because he was more wise than the other sons. Felt so upset, Prince Agong left  Sekadau to the Lawang Kuari region. Then Prince Senarong lowered the king of  Belitang kingdom.

After Prince Kadar died, the government held by Prince Suma. Prince  Suma had been sent by his parents to learned religion at Mempawah Kingdom, therefore in his government Islam grew rapidly in Sekadau Kingdom. Then the royal capital be transferred to Sungai Bara village and a kingdom mosque kerajaan had built at there. In this era, Holland came to Sekadau.

Then Prince Suma replaced by Abang Todong with the tittle Sultan Anum. Then replaced again by Abang Ipong (Pangeran Ratu) who not a descendant of the king, but he ascend the throne because the next prince was not adult enough. After the prince was adult, then he crowned ruled with tittle Sultan Mansur. Then Sekadau’s Kingdom diverted to Gusti Mekah with title Panembahan Gusti Mekah Kesuma Negara,  because the next prince, that is Abang Usman, was not adult enough. Then his mother took Abang Usman to Nanga Taman.

After Panembahan Gusti Mekah Kesuma Negara’s governtment is over, Panembahan Gusti Akhmad Sri Negara crowned to the throne. But by dutch colonizers, panembahan with his family then deported to Malang, Jawa Timur, with charge has instigated para tumenggung to melawan Belanda.

Because of the accident, Panembahan Haji Gusti Abdullah then diangkat with tittle Pangeran Mangku as wakil panembahan. Then he stayed at the palace. After his coronation , Prince Mangku  died. Then he replaced by Panembahan Gusti Akhmad, then Gusti Hamid. Then the King of Sekadau was  Panembahan Gusti Kelip.

In 1944 Gusti Kelip was killed by japan . the Japanese then raised Gusti Adnan as magnified Sekadau Kingdom with tittle Pangeran Agung. He came from Belitang. In Juni 1952, with Gusti Kolen from Belitang’s kingdom, Gusti Adnan menyerahkan the kingdom’s administration to the government of Republic Indonesia in Jakarta. And then in 2003 has being the Sekadau regency.
